PUBLIC TRANSIT DRIVER

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Starting Pay: $13.75 – $15.00 per hour (based on experience and qualifications)

Employment Type: Full-time & Part-time 

POSITION SUMMARY

As a Transit Driver with Scott County Transit System, Inc., you’ll play a vital role in

helping our community stay connected. Reporting to the Supervisor, you’ll be

responsible for safely operating a transit vehicle, ensuring the safety and comfort

of all passengers, and delivering excellent customer service. Your role is essential

in supporting the independence and mobility of those we serve.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This is a field-based position, which means you’ll be driving in a variety of weather

and road conditions. You’ll be exposed to traffic noise, outdoor temperatures,

and other typical driving-related conditions. Occasional travel outside of town

may be required.

Drivers must remain calm, focused, and adaptable—even when dealing with

delays, traffic, passenger concerns, or mechanical issues.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Education: High school diploma or GED required.

• Experience: Prior professional driving experience is helpful but not

required. We provide at least 24 hours of hands-on training before solo

operation.

• Skills:

o Strong verbal and written communication

o Excellent decision-making and customer service skills

o Basic computer literacy

• Licensing & Testing:

o Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check

o Ongoing drug and alcohol testing required (per 49CFR Part 655)

o Proof of legal work status in the U.S. required

o Chauffeur’s license required 

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED

• Vans and cut-away buses

• Wheelchair lifts and securement systems

• Tablets and two-way radios

• Daily vehicle inspections and fueling equipment

SAFETY & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Drivers must consistently follow all safety protocols and stay current with new

safety procedures and regulations. All necessary training and certifications will be

provided, including:

• CPR and First Aid

• Defensive Driving

• Passenger Assistance Techniques

• Wheelchair Securement

• Drug and Alcohol Awareness

COMMUNICATION EXPECTATIONS

Drivers must be able to clearly and respectfully communicate with passengers,

coworkers, and supervisors. This includes both verbal interactions and written

documentation (trip logs, reports, etc.).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

This role requires physical and mental readiness to ensure safe and

compassionate passenger transport. Drivers must be able to:

• Assist passengers with mobility challenges, including securement of

wheelchairs

• React appropriately in medical or emergency situations

• Regularly bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, and lift up to 25 lbs.

• Operate a vehicle for extended periods

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Transportation:

• Safely transport passengers to scheduled destinations

• Operate on schedule and respond to on-demand requests

• Accommodate out-of-town or medical trips as needed

• Handle emergency situations according to company procedures

Vehicle Care:

• Perform pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections daily

• Keep vehicle keys on your person during inspections

• Fuel vehicles as needed, ideally at end of shift

• Report any vehicle damage or concerns promptly and thoroughly

Passenger Interaction:

• Offer courteous, respectful service at all times

• Assist with boarding and exiting as needed

• Ensure safety and comfort throughout the ride

Teamwork & Conduct:

• Maintain a professional appearance (uniforms must be worn, clean, and

free of damage; closed-toe shoes required)

• Attend regular staff meetings

• Work cooperatively with team members and contribute to a positive

workplace culture

Recordkeeping:

• Track fares, trips, and mileage accurately

• Collect necessary passenger signatures and document pick-up/drop-off

times

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

• Physical: Must be capable of lifting/moving 25 lbs., assisting passengers

in/out of vehicles, and operating lifts

• Mental: Must remain alert, patient, and prepared to respond to

unexpected challenges, always applying company policies and training
